OSCE Mission to Montenegro

The Mission was established on 29 June 2006, following a request by the Government of Montenegro, after the country’s restoration of independence in the same year. With its headquarters in Podgorica, the Mission supports Montenegro with its reform agenda and further strengthening of its democratic institutions and governance, in line with OSCE commitments and principles.

The Mission's thematic and programmatic activities

The Mission's programmatic activities are implemented in close co-operation with government and state institutions, media and civil society.

The Mission supports police reform, efforts to combat organized crime, and initiatives to reduce the proliferation and trafficking of small arms and light weapons. It also assists Montenegro’s parliament and State Election Commission with strengthening democratic institutions and electoral processes.

In addition, the Mission promotes youth engagement and gender equality, and supports national institutions and civil society organizations in preventing violence against women and girls. It also contributes to building an efficient and accountable judicial system, ensuring effective administration of justice.

In the media field, the Mission works to advance freedom of information, media professionalism and self-regulatory mechanisms. It also promotes the safety of journalists, public information literacy and the prevention of hate speech.
