OSCE Mission to Montenegro supports a one-day workshop on hate crime for university students

Raising awareness about hate crimes among students was the focus of a one-day workshop for students from the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Political Science of the University of Montenegro that organized by the OSCE Mission to Montenegro in co-operation with the University and held on 14 November 2017.

Raising awareness about hate crimes among students was the focus of a one-day workshop for students from the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Political Science of the University of Montenegro that organized by the OSCE Mission to Montenegro in co-operation with the University and held on 14 November 2017.

The workshop, which was led by international experts, introduced the concepts behind and the definition of hate crimes as well as the international legal provisions and practices in this field. “

“Domestic legislation is based on international provisions and aims at effective implementation of international obligations in the  fight against hate crimes” said Robert Kucharski, Rule of Law Programme Manager in the OSCE Mission.

The interactive workshop  engaged 26 students in  in a debate about their beliefs and  raised their awareness about the problem of hate  crime.    

“We believe that you, as university students, have the potential to bring positive changes in society in the medium to long term” said Lia Magnaguagno, Democratization Programme Manager at the OSCE Mission, when in opening the event.

This event is part of the Mission’s cross-programmatic project that aims  to increase the capacity of institutions, civil society, students, and media to effectively promote and apply standards on non-discrimination, equal treatments and other basic human rights.
